Since my time slingin wax for my college radio station, WCWM, I’ve been making Halloween mixes. Something about seeing a DJ play dark, relentless techno set struck a nerve and I haven’t been able to shake that foreboding sense of dread ever since. Doing mixes has given me a lot of chances to set a tone, build some kind of atmosphere. And “spooky” is one of my favorites.
Here’s a mix I did last year for no reason in particular other than Halloween is great and ghosts are cool. You can throw clattering chain SFX and weird wolf howls over anything and it gives it that cheap elementary school haunted-house-in-the-gym feel. And that’s just the kind of ‘ween I like the best.
